The Grand Scheme of Things

When analysing our role in the lives of others
On our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers
Our friends, our foes, or that man on the street
That no one bothers
We walk past different faces everyday
Faces behind which revolutionary dreams lay
Faces that are exhibitions to the world
Of the situation the owner wants to portray
No normal human can pay their full attention
To every single face, ever single expression
It is beyond our reach and thus
We rely on Divine Intervention
The amazing way in which our lives
Intertwine, the so called “coincidence” strives
To bring home that message, we can affect that person
Do I simply look on, as he nose-dives
Hopelessly into the sea of despair?
Do I pull him, or watch him gasp for air?
What difference will I make? I’m just another person
Do I remain inactive, or should I dare
To reach out, extend a beacon of hope?
Or will they just give up again, reach for that rope?
If I choose to effect her life,
How will she cope?
We have to ask ourselves every single day
If we have the strength to lift someone else’s dismay
Because without a doubt, every single one of us
Needs help, in more than one way
We detach ourselves from social situations
Which question our strength to deal with tribulations
Do we stay steadfast, protect our beliefs?
Do we let oppression destroy the nations?
They say a when a butterfly flaps his wings
On one side of the world, it brings
Reverberations of a much greater scale to the other,
As part of the grand scheme of things
That door of opportunity that slammed shut
That failed job interview that could’ve got you out of a rut
Meant there was another, just waiting to be revealed
Do you put yourself out there again; do you trust your gut?
It’s a blessing in disguise, all part of the plan
Maybe he didn’t get that job in Japan
Because he was meant for greater things
Bigger fish to fry in that great frying pan
Of opportunity that presents itself in the weirdest way
That enlightenment always comes our way
It’s just God’s reminder to us
That if we stick with him, If we pray
If we don’t forget him, If we keep believing
There is no limit as to what we will be achieving
Both individually and as a unit
We just to stop that faith from leaving
Let’s do what we can, let’s do our part
In this grand scheme of things, this work of art
Let’s be true examples of personalities
My people, LETS START

  1. i think this is a wonderful poem but all i would say is the rhyme scheme is a tad simplicite in the sense that only the last words rhyme and also is there a need for a rhyme scheme?
We have grown up with certain conventions we tend to follow when writing or reading poems; that it should have a rhyme scheme, that too abstract a metaphor will deter people from understanding and fully grasping the conceptuality of the message the poet is trying to convey so we steer clear of these things, its a shame really, poetry is not about telling a story at face value, its about using literary techniques to tell a story in a sophisticated way, otherwise its just another monologue.
