The Labour Party
1. Who is the leader of your party and can you tell us more about them? (200 words)
The year 2010 was always going to be one of the most important years for the people of UK and indeed the world. Is it because of the Fifa world cup? No. It Is because on May the 6th nearly all of those who are legible to vote will be going to the polling stations and casting their vote.
The labour party have always been one of the main parties and it has been a desirable party for the people of Britain to vote for. Labour have been in power for the last 13 years with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown as the respective Prime Ministers over that period.
Gordon Brown was born in February of 1951 in the town of Giffnock in Scotland. Mr. Brown always had a key interest in politics at an early age. He joined the Labour Party in 1969 and was elected MP for Dunfermline East in 1983. He rose rapidly up the Labour Party ranks. He became the opposition spokesman for Trade and Industry from 1989 to 1992 and then the Treasury from 1992 to 1997.
After the landslide victory of 1997, where the Labour party won 418 seats (the most seats the party has ever held) Gordon Brown was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer on 2 May 1997. Mr. Brown held the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer for a record ten years and two months making him the longest chancellor in modern history. During his time as Chancellor he achieved two important aims for the Labour party which were: making the Bank of England independent and delivering an agreement on poverty and climate change at the G8 summit in 2005.
On the 27th Of June 2007 Brown ceased to be the Chancellor of the Exchequer and became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Like all modern Prime Ministers, Brown concurrently serves as the First Lord of the Treasury and the Minister for the Civil Service, and is a member of the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. When Gordon Brown took over as Prime Minister, he declared, “Let the work of change begin.” And some would argue it has!!
2. What are your party’s major policies? (300 words)
The Labour Party has a number of policies on the different problems that are facing the British people at the moment. One of the maim aims of the Labour party is economic safety and growth. Their aims include efficiency savings and eliminating waste. They also want to support the economic recovery by more than halving the deficit by 2014 through growth, fair taxes and cuts to lower priority spending. The Labour party aims to build a high tech economy and modernize our infrastructure. They will endeavour to provide UK Finance for Growth, which will bring in £4 billion together to provide capital for growing businesses.
For any Party education is a key issue to address in their manifesto and policies. Every primary school children needing one-to-one tuition would receive it under Labour plans. If parents were unhappy over a school’s performance, they would get the power to bring in new school leadership teams through “mergers and takeovers”. Every child leaving primary school will be secure in the basics. Finally Labour have also promised that every young person will be guaranteed education or training until 18, with 75 per cent going on to higher education, completing an advanced apprenticeship or technician level training, by the age of 30. These are some of the objective of Labours new plans.
Many of us have been under the care of the NHS from time to time. However, which party realise the idea of an NHS system? It was Labour. This has been one of Labours’ greatest achievements. However Labour wants to continue its great achievement of the NHS by giving patients the right to cancer test results within one week of referral, and a maximum 18 weeks’ wait for treatment or the offer of going private. The Labour party also wants to have a major expansion of diagnostic training.
These are just a few policies of the Labour party regarding three main issues that need to be addressed in these difficult times.
3. Why should the public vote for your party? (100 words)
So why should we vote Labour? If you believe in a fair society where every single person has the opportunity to achieve their aims regardless of their background. Then this is only possible under a Labour Government. If you believe in a party that cares about the future of all Britain’s people and works to ensure that future prosperity is available to all, no matter what your background is, then Labour is the party for you. Let the change continue.
