The Fighter (Film Review)
Impressive line-ups don’t necessarily make impressive movies or even good movies for that matter. It is therefore crucial to separate the film from the big names. If you had the displeasure of watching The Expendables, you’ll know precisely where I’m coming from. I’m glad to say that Mark Wahlberg has begun to buck that trend; The Other Guys was huge hit at the box office, co-staring Will Farrall. Thankfully, Wahlberg has continued that trend with The Fighter.
The Fighter is a biographical movie about Micky Ward, a professional boxer who has to contend with his older brother and a very demanding family in his bid to win the World Championship. Christian Bale who plays Dickie, has rightly been nominated Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes. His intense performance alone makes the ticket price seem more than worthwhile. The soundtrack is left wanting, however Amy Adams makes up for it with a flawless representation of a typical college drop out turned hot bartender. It takes a while for the movie to get going, but the build is necessary in order to understand the complexities of the character. The movie does appeal to all audiences, there are a number of themes in the plot that should engage you. For those of you who fear this is purely a ‘guy movie,’ about boxing, I beg to differ. It offers much, much more.
8/10
Best Bit: Bale acting like a psychotic drug addict
Worst Bit: Poor soundtrack
Final Comment: THANK GOD CHRISTIAN BALE IS BACK!
